PROFILE: Based in Jackson, the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole (CFJH) is one of the largest grantmakers in Wyoming. It seeks to “improve lives through philanthropic leadership by: Providing superior donor services, Making grants that positively impact the community, Ensuring sustainability of the philanthropic community, Acting as a leader, catalyst and resource” This foundation was established in 1989 to work with both donors and local nonprofits. It serves over 200 nonprofits in the area, and administers around 240 funds.
Funding priorities include arts, civic involvement, education, environment, health and human services, and recreation. Although most the foundation's funding stays in Teton County, some fund holders give outside of the community, as well.
There are three grant programs at CFJH. Microgrants of $1,000 or less are awarded for urgent and unexpected needs of nonprofits. It accepts applications on a rolling basis throughout the year.
The youth philanthropy program engages local high school students with hands-on philanthropy lessons, allowing teens to review grant proposals and meet with applicants. These applications are typically due in early January and are for $500 to $4,000 each.
The foundation awards competitive grants in amounts over $1,000, with deadlines in April and October. The funder typically gives over $500,000 per year to Jackson-area groups, and the funds must be used in Teton County. In addition to grants, this funder also awards scholarships and the Luke Stalker Global Fellowship. An annual CFJH event is Old Bill’s Fun Run for Charities, which raised at least $12.1 million in a recent year. Another event is the Thursday Roundtable, which brings together donors with common goals to recommend grants. Other events and workshops are posted on the foundation website, as well.
