Equipoise Fund

OVERVIEW: The Equipoise Fund supports efforts that benefit women and girls in Wyoming.

FUNDING AREAS: Women and girls

IP TAKE: This funder’s women and girls’ giving concentrates in Wyoming. It seeks its own grantees and prefers funding leadership conferences. The Equipoise Fund’s giving is very targeted, so make sure your work is a strong fit before reaching out. This is not a particularly accessible funder, but don’t hesitate to contact them about how their funding is evolving.

PROFILE: Established in 2003, the Equipoise Fund is a private operating foundation based in Wilson, Wyoming. Mickey Babcock created this foundation after retiring from her interior design practice and being involved with the Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis. Instead of starting another business, she turned her attention to philanthropy and relocated to Wyoming. Babcock is the president and director of the foundation, and she is joined on the board by a secretary and a “chief guru.” The word “epuipose” means “the space between opposing forces; balance.” The foundation aims to "energize, enrich and encourage the vision, voice and visibility of the women and girls of Wyoming.” It funds local efforts for women and girls.

The Equipoise Fund looks to find a balance point in the issues it supports and is an alternative funder that bridges gaps between ideas, dreams and reality. It commonly funds fresh new ideas that have not been tried before, as well as existing projects that need a fresh perspective or boost of energy. The fund has recently provided grants for seed funding general operating support and program support. Grantees include organizations that host women-focused leadership conferences, grassroots advocacy efforts to help women be more economically self-sufficient and an elementary school pilot program to serve young girls.

Grants range between about $1,000 and $5,000. Equipoise typically awards less than $100,000 per year. Learn more about this funder’s local giving by examining its recent tax records. Grantmaking focuses on Wyoming. Past local grantees include the Equality State Policy Center, Wyoming Latina Youth Conference and Womentum.

This foundation does not accept unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits, but instead identifies its own partners to work with and determine viable grant solutions. Direct general questions to the staff at info@equipoisefund.org or 307-734-4202.
