New York Foundation for the Arts

OVERVIEW: The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) provides artists and art organizations with cash grants, fiscal sponsorship, online resources and training.

PROFILE: Founded in 1971, the New York Foundation for the Arts “empowers working artists and emerging arts organizations across all disciplines at critical stages in their creative lives and professional/organizational development.” The foundation makes over $2 million in grants each year, and offers a vast array of scholarships, online resources, training and mentoring programs to performing, visual and literary artists throughout the state of New York.

The New York Foundation for the Arts offers the following grants and awards to individual artists:

  • The Tri-State Relief Fund to Support Non-Salaried Workers in the Visual Arts awards unrestricted grants of $2,000 to non-salaried, freelance or contract professionals in the field of visual arts who have been affected by the COVID-19 crisis.

  • The NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship consists of $7,000 unrestricted grants to artists in 15 different disciplines who are “at critical stages in their creative development.”

  • The NYC Women’s Fund for Media, Music and Theatre are awarded to artists whose work “reflects the voices and perspectives of all who identify as women.”

  • Rauchenberg Emergency Grants provide one-time awards of $5,000 to visual and media artists or choreographers who are citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.

  • The Recharge Foundation Fellowship for New Surrealist Art is a $5,000 for U.S. painters or students working in the New Surrealist style.

  • The Canadian Women Artists’ Award gives a $5,000 stipend to a Canadian women working in the state of New York in any one of the 15 disciplines recognized by the foundation.

  • The JGS Fellowship for Photography is a $7,000 award for five photographic artists working in the State of New York, but outside of New York City.

  • The Murray Reich Award is awarded each year to enable an artist “with a long history of creative practice to pursue deeper investigations or new explorations that can inform and enrich their work.”

  • The Tomorrowland Projects Foundation Award supports collaborative work that addresses contemporary social issues and may be used toward the development of new technologies or research.
