PROFILE: The Sitka Legacy Foundation (formerly Greater Sitka Legacy Fund) is an affiliate of the Alaska Community Foundation (ACF) and based in Sitka, Alaska. A grant from the Rasmuson Foundation helped establish the ACF Affiliate Program in 2008 to address the causes that are most important to local communities and inspire local philanthropy with the help of volunteer advisory boards. The foundation is a long-term endowment fund for the local community that supports local self-reliance and resiliency. It funds local efforts related to health and wellness, education, the great outdoors, arts and culture, and community development.

The foundation regularly supports projects that maintain Sitka as a healthy and progressive place for people to live and work. It prioritizes the spiritual, historical, environmental, artistic, education, and economic wellbeing of its residents. It funds a broad range of community needs but does not typically support youth sports, travel outside Sitka, or political or religious causes. The funder awards grants for both immediate needs and long-term goals. Recently, the primary focuses on this foundation have been on vulnerable residents, including seniors, children, homeless individuals, and people with disabilities.

Grants range between about $500 and $1,500. Learn more about this funder’s local giving on the grants page of the foundation website. Grantmaking exclusively focuses on the Sitka region of Alaska. Past local grantees include Alaska Arts Southeast, Youth Advocates of Sitka, Southeast Alaska Independent Living, and Brave Heart Volunteers.

This foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits. The annual competitive grant cycle is open between August 31 and October 15. SGLF utilizes an online grant application system to accept grant seekers’ submissions. Direct general questions to the staff at greatersitka@alaskacf.org or 855-336-6701.
