OVERVIEW: Surya and Mohrannie Mohapatra, and their family move philanthropy through the Mohapatra Family Foundation, Inc., which gave away $270,000 in a recent year. Grantmaking through the foundation has touched a handful of organizations of late.

BACKGROUND: Surya N. Mohapatra graduated with his B.Sc.Eng from NIT Rourkela, India, his M.Sc. from University of Salford, England and his Ph.D., University of London, England. He served as senior vice president of Picker International, now part of Philips Medical Systems. Mohapatra went on to serve as chairman, president, and CEO of Quest Diagnostics Inc., a world leader in diagnostic testing, information and services.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Mohapatra is a trustee of Rockefeller University, which the family steadily supports. He is also an Executive in Residence at the Columbia Business School. The Mohapatras support Columbia University. Other grantees have included Johns Hopkins University and Alpine Learning Group Foundation. Alpine Learning Group describes itself as “Bergen County, NJ's comprehensive resource for families living with autism.”

OTHER: Mohapatra is a board member of Malaria No More, and Safe Water Networks, which promotes social entrepreneurship to provide safe, affordable water to people in need.

LOOKING FORWARD: It’s unclear if grantmaking will ramp up through the family’s foundation in the coming years.
