Tamara Gustavson: Donor Grants

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Public Storage

FUNDING AREAS: Medical Research Leukemia

OVERVIEW: Tamara Gustavson moves philanthropy through the William Lawrence and Blanche Hughes Foundation, which awards grants to nonprofits in the field of medical research related to pediatric acute lymphatic leukemia.

BACKGROUND: Tamara Gustavson graduated from University of Southern California in 1983. She joined the board of her father’s company, Public Storage after she graduated and rose to vice president before leaving in 2003 to raise her children. She returned four years later as a board member. She also sits on the board of another of her father's companies, American Homes 4 Rent, a publicly-traded REIT focusing on single-family rental homes.

ISSUES:

MEDICAL RESEARCH: The William Lawrence and Blanche Hughes Foundation’s grantmaking is laser-focused on nonprofits in the field of medical research related to pediatric acute lymphatic leukemia. The forces here are personal as Gustavson’s brother died at age eight due to the disease. Grantees have included Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Seattle Children’s Hospital Foundation, USC, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Center for Cancer Research, and Baylor College of Medicine.

Away from this health cause, Gustavson has also supported HollyRod Foundation, a provider of compassionate care to those living with autism and Parkinson's disease.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the family to stick with its established interest areas.
