PROFILE: The Eloise Susanna Gale Foundation was established in 2008. It was founded by real estate investor Barden Gale and his wife Flavia and is dedicated to the memory of their late daughter Eloise, a young teacher who believed that education was the most important factor of equality in society. Barden Gale is vice chairman of Mack Real Estate Group. The foundation does not maintain a website, though the couple have spoke publicly about their giving. The Eloise Susanna Gale Foundation supports education, literature and music.

Grants for Arts and Culture, and K-12 Education

Overall, the foundation's grantmaking is marked by Eloise's interests in education and the arts (she studied ballet). As Flavia puts it, "[w]e believe that access to culture is a basic right, no different from access to education or access to health services. So we feel a certain duty." The Gales have supported Oxford University, from where Flavia graduated, and helped create a Chinese Studies center at the university. The Gale's other children also influence giving and will take the lead in the coming years. Their daughter, Camilla, supports children's theatre and Brooklyn's parks and green spaces. And their son-in-law, Zach, supports the New York Tenement Museum.

Past grantees include International School of Brooklyn, New Visions for Public Schools, Tenement Museum, Fort Greene Park, Prospect Park Alliance, and Second Stage Theatre.
