PROFILE: Established as a trust in 1953, the Hagedorn Fund. William Hagedorn directed that the remainder of his estate be dedicated to a fund, in memory of his late wife, Tillie Hagedorn, that would support religious or charitable organizations. The Hagedorn Fund primarily funds grantmaking in New York City related to health, gardens, social services, youth, education, senior services and housing and community development.

Grants for Health and Diseases

The Hagedorn Fund’s grantmaking makes health organizations one of its priorities, including cancer, HIV/AIDS, and blindness. Recent grants have gone to Calvary Hospital, Healthcare Chaplaincy, CancerCare, Inc., Foundation for AIDS Research, and Cancer Research Institute.

Important Grant Details:

Grants range from $5,000 to $80,000. In a recent year, the foundation gave away around $3 million. Grantmaking focuses on New York City. Past local grantees include Advocates for Children of New York, Bronx River Alliance, Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, Citymeals-on-Wheels, Inner-City Scholarship Fund, and New York Public Library.

The Foundation does not accept unsolicited proposals. It provides project, operating, and capital support. The regular deadline for applications is September 1st. Decisions are made before the Fund’s fiscal year end, which is December 31st.
