Hajim Family Foundation

OVERVIEW:  The Hajim Family Foundation makes grants to organizations that promote education, health services, healthcare, arts, culture, conservation, preservation and recreation.

IP TAKE: The foundation lacks transparency, which limits information available on its grantmaking priorities and activities. This funder does not accept unsolicited proposals or requests for funding, and it tends to prefer supporting organizations with a personal connection to a family member. All of which make this funder a tough nut to crack.

Nebraska and Florida are other important sites of grantmaking.

PROFILE:  The Hajim Family Foundation was established in 1987 by financier Edmund Hajim and his wife Barbara. Edmund held leadership positions at Capital Group, Inc., E.F. Hutton & Co., Lehman Securities and Lehman Management.  He joined Furman Selz LLC as chairman, and later became CEO. He’s currently the chairman of HighVista Strategies. The foundation does not maintain a website, but does have a slight web presence. Grants for Higher Education, Public Health and Access, and Arts and Culture

Edmund is chairman emeritus of the board of trustees of University of Rochester. He gave a $30 million gift to create the Edmund A. Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and to support those studies. The family has also provided more than 200 scholarships to deserving students at the University of Rochester, Harvard Business School, University of Vermont, University of Denver, Westchester Community College, the Brunswick School and Middlesex School. Hajim pursued his studies at University of Rochester on a Naval ROTC scholarship. It’s also worth noting that Barbara was once the fundraising director for the Brunswick School in Greenwich. Another important grantee is the Horatio Alger Association, where Hajim serves on the board. Hajim received a 2015 Horatio Alger Award.

Past grantees have included City Squash, Ethical Culture Fieldston School, New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Episcopal Charities New York, Central Park Conservancy, and Dramatists Guild Fund.
