OVERVIEW: The Meringoff Family Foundation supports education, health, medical research and community development in New York City.

FUNDING AREAS: Education, health, medical research, community development

IP TAKE: This is a very family-run philanthropy in which the founder has been grooming his children to take over and pursue their charitable interests in the future through MFF. However, this is not an accessible funder.

PROFILE: Established in 2008, the Meringoff Family Foundation (MFF) is a family foundation based in New York City, New York. This is the foundation of Stephen Meringoff, who is the founder and managing partner of Himmel & Meringoff, a property management company he co-founded in 1985 and that has an extensive commercial property portfolio. The foundation "makes hands-on philanthropic investments primarily in NYC-based nonprofits that are working to level the playing field for young New Yorkers.” MFF funds local efforts for education, health, medical research and community development.

The Meringoff Family Foundation reflects the Meringoff family’s belief that it is their job to invest in local NYC children to help them build the future. MFF primarily focuses on public education in New York City, but it also funds innovative medical research and public health interventions to a lesser extent. More than half of annual funds typically go towards public education. Science and medicine grants are the second-highest priority, followed by New York City community grants and discretionary grants. MFF makes multi-year grants of up to three years in duration. MFF’s Gen 2 Giving program awards grants at the recommendation of Stephen Meringoff’s four young adult daughters. The purpose of this program is to support nonprofits that reflect the second generation’s interests and allow them to find their own philanthropic voice as responsible grantmakers.

Grants range between about $1,000 and $300,000. Learn more about this funder’s local giving by examining its recent tax records. Grantmaking focuses on New York City. Past local grantees include Breakthrough NY, Cora Dance and Committee for Hispanic Children and Families.

This foundation does not accept unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits, as it prefers to hand-select its own grantees. Direct general questions to the foundation’s executive director, Stuart Post, at spost@meringofffoundation.org or 212-888-1810.
