PROFILE: The Lily Auchincloss Foundation was established in 1997 in New York City to continue the philanthropic work of Lily Auchincloss. Auchincloss was born in 1922 and was the daughter of Arnold Louis van Ameringen, the founder of International Flavors and Fragrance companys. Educated at Radcliffe, she was a noted journalist and tireless supporter of numerous New York cultural institutions in her lifetime. The foundation aims “to enrich the lives of the people of New York City.” Its current grantmaking areas are the environment, the arts and human services. Grantmaking is restricted to the five boroughs of New York City.

Auchincloss’s environmental grants focus on the preservation of New York City’s historical buildings, parks and gardens as well as environmental education programs. The foundation’s arts program supports arts and arts education programs in the areas of visual arts, theater and music. And in human services, the foundation maintains the broad goal of supporting programs that improve the quality of life of city residents through “prevention, change and education.”

Grants range from $5,000 to $50,000 and support New York City organizations of all sizes. Recent grantees include the Guardian’s of Flushing Bay, the Elizabeth Street Garden, Her Justice and the Co/Lab Theater Group, which provides theatrical experiences for individuals with developmental disabilities. Additional information about past grantees is available at the foundation’s website.

This funder runs three grant cycles each year and accepts applications for its environmental program in the spring, its arts program in the fall and its human services program in the winter. Due dates are available at the foundation’s grant cycles page. The foundation also awards discretionary grants at the behest of its directors.
