IP TAKE: Hedge fund billionaire Larry Robbins doesn't just write checks, he also gets involved in the organizations he supports. Still in his 40’s, Robbins is a funder to watch.
PROFILE: Billionaire Larry Robbins is the founder and chief executive of the hedge fund Glenview Capital Management. Most of his foundation's grantmaking takes place in New York City, where the foundation operates, and in Illinois, where Robbins was born. Although the Robbins Family Foundation does not maintain a website our outline specific initiatives for its funding, its grantmaking is underpinned by active civic engagement; Larry Robbins sits on the boards of several organizations dealing with education and poverty.
Robbins has provided ongoing support to the charter school movement in New York. He is the chair of the board at KIPP New York, the local branch of the national charter school network founded by fellow University of Pennsylvania graduate and friend Mike Feinberg. He also chairs the board of the Relay Graduate School of Education and is a board member of Teach for America New York. Poverty alleviation is another important area of giving for the foundation. Robbins is on the board of the Robin Hood Foundation, which has also received ongoing support.
Robbins Family Foundation grants tend to be large, with some grants awarded in amounts of more than $1 million. The average grant size is about $100,000. Most New York grantees are large, well-established organizations, the foundation tends to support the same recipients year after year. For additional information about past grantmaking, see the foundation’s recent tax filings.
