PROFILE: Established in 1977, the Snider Foundation was created by late businessman Ed Snider. Ed founded the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers. He created Spectacor, the management company to oversee the Flyers and Spectrum. Following his passing in 2016, Ed Snider's family continues his legacy of giving. The Snider Foundation focuses on American values, supporting strong communities, and philanthropic efforts that sustain Jewish culture and combat anti-Semitism.

The foundation’s grantmaking focuses on three main areas: American Values, including “individual liberty, constitutional freedom, economic liberty and private enterprise”; Community, supporting organizations dedicated to building better societies”; and Jewish Culture & Survival, focusing on philanthropic efforts that sustain Jewish culture and combat anti-Semitism. It gives grants for operating support, as well as towards capital campaigns, scholarships, among other work. Since its founding, the foundation has granted more than $40 million in philanthropic gifts, including a gift of $5 million in 2014 to University of Maryland, Ed’s alma mater, to create the Ed Snider Center for Enterprise and Markets. 

Grants range between $100 to around $2.2 million. In a recent year, the foundation gave away approximately $11.6 million. Past local grantees include Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), Philadelphia Holocaust Remembrance Foundation, Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, Temple University Hospital, and Vetri Community Partnership, which works to “help people experience the connection between healthy eating and healthy living.”
