PROFILE: Established in 1996, the Roemer Foundation is steered by billionaire Mary Alice Dorrance Malone, the largest shareholder of the Campbell Soup Company. The foundation does not maintain a website, which restricts further information regarding its priority areas and grantmaking strategies. According to tax filings, the Roemer Foundation primarily funds grantmaking related to health, the environment, animals, and human services.

Mary serves on the board of trustees of the Chester County Hospital Foundation and steadily supports Chester County Hospital, which is part of Penn Medicine. She also has a passion for horses and is president of Iron Spring Farm, a horse breeding and training company with properties in Pennsylvania and Florida.

Grants range from $1,000 to $700,000. In a recent fiscal year, the foundation gave away around $1.4 million. Past grantees include Brandywine Health Foundation; Caridad Center, one of whose aims is to “upgrade the health, education, and living standards of underserved children and families”; Main Line Animal Rescue; Philadelphia Zoo; and Brandywine Conservancy, where Mary is an honorary trustee.

The foundation keeps a low profile and does not accept unsolicited proposals.
