PROFILE: Established in 1998, Community Foundation of Northwest Georgia (CFNG) is a community foundation based in Dalton, Georgia. It manages more than 189 charitable funds for families, individuals and nonprofits. CFNG aims to “promote and facilitate philanthropy in Northwest Georgia.” Grantmaking includes arts and culture, civics, education, social services, historic preservation, and the environment.

The foundation approaches grantmaking broadly and serves a wide range of local interests. It has three affiliates through which it awards many of its grants. Local philanthropists established the Dalton-Whitfield Community Foundation in 1998, the Cartersville-Bartow Community Foundation in 2004, and the Calhoun-Gordon Community Foundation in 2007. These foundations serve more specific geographic areas than CFNG in general. CFNG also administers the North Georgia Electric Membership Foundation’s Operation Round Up grant program.

Grants typically range from $1,000 to $4,000 each. However, Operation Round Up grants are up to $10,000 per year. Learn more about past grantees in the funder’s blog. Grantmaking is generally restricted to the Northwest Georgia region. More specifically, CFNG serves the following counties: Bartow, Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Fannin, Floyd, Gilmer, Gordon, Murray, Pickens, Walker and Whitfield.

CFNG accepts unsolicited grant applications from local nonprofits online. For its competitive community grants, the foundation has March 31 and October 1 deadlines. However, the Cartersville-Bartow affiliate has just one grant cycle with a deadline of March 31. The deadlines for Operation Round Up grants are February 28 and August 31.
