We’ve Been Keeping Tabs on Philanthropy in New Mexico. Here's What We're Learning

As part of Inside Philanthropy’s ongoing coverage of the Southwest, we’ve been closely tracking and covering grantmaking in New Mexico. In our Southwest blog, we’ve highlighted the giving strategies of major local players like the Santa Fe Community Foundation, McCune Charitable Foundation and J.F. Maddox Foundation. We have also covered the work of smaller and niche foundations in New Mexico, including the Frederick H. Leonhardt Foundation, Thornburg Foundation and Albert I. Pierce Foundation, to help local grantseekers tune into lesser-known sources of funding.
Community foundations are a big deal in New Mexico, with major giving power in places like the Albuquerque Community Foundation, Taos Community Foundation and Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico. In fact, there was talk a few years ago about consolidating all of the state’s community foundations into one entity, but that didn’t move forward as proposed. In addition to community foundations that pool donations from local donors, other types of grantmakers operate around the state. A mix of corporate donors, private family foundations and health legacy foundations lends diversity to New Mexico’s philanthropic scene.
We have written extensive profiles of over 20 foundations that focus specifically on the needs of New Mexico nonprofits. Through our research over the years, we’ve found that New Mexico giving stands out in the Southwest for its heightened focus on Native American populations, cultural preservation, and arts and culture. New Mexico funders also dedicate plenty of resources to early childhood education, economic development and domestic violence prevention. The New Mexico Association of Grantmakers is the state’s regional membership association, bringing donors together to encourage more charitable giving.
