Arizona is a major grantmaking hub in the southwestern United States, and a state we’ve been exploring in depth here at Inside Philanthropy. Our reporting has highlighted the work of top Arizona foundations, such as the Arizona Community Foundation, Flinn Foundation and the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust. But we’ve also investigated the giving habits of low-key family funders like the Garcia Family Foundation, popular sports team funders like the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation, and growing health legacy funders like the Vitalyst Health Foundation.

Meanwhile, we’ve assembled detailed profiles of over 20 foundations that specifically focus on the needs of nonprofits in Arizona.

Since IP first began to cover Arizona grantmaking, we have learned a lot about the local giving that helps make this part of the country unique. The Arizona Grantmakers Forum operates at the center of philanthropic life in Arizona and connects over 70 member organizations and more than 300 philanthropy professionals across the state. Since 2004, the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits has provided over 20,000 nonprofits across Arizona with educational resources, advocacy and networking opportunities.

Arizona foundations often prioritize issues like education, basic needs for disadvantaged youth and access to quality healthcare. Other niche interests include end-of-life care, prenatal care and urban gardening to supply nutritious food. Many professional sports teams are active on the philanthropic scene and largely focus their attention on programs for children and youth. Meanwhile, impact investing strategies have been gaining traction among Arizona’s most powerful funders, while special interest funders are paying close attention to the needs of local women and the LGBTQ community.

Nonprofits based in Phoenix and Tucson often find it easiest to attract the grant dollars of Arizona grantmakers. However, there has also been a significant push to devote more attention to the state’s more remote and rural areas, especially to benefit Native American populations.

In recent years, Inside Philanthropy has published many articles about grantmaking in Arizona, becoming a leading resource on the state’s foundations and donors with over 3 million annual visitors to our website. We simplify the process of researching individual and institutional funders with our GrantFinder tool and help grantseekers connect with nearly 15,000 foundation staff members through our PeopleFinder database.

If you want to keep up with Arizona-based grantmaking and access the funding resources you need, you’re in the right place.
