PROFILE: Established in 1897, the Jewish Women International (JWI) is based in Washington, DC and was originally known as Ruth Lodge No. 1, the Daughters of Judah, B’nai B’rith’s first auxiliary. The organization was initially focused on women’s volunteer opportunities to “improve the community around them.” Today the organization focuses on preventing gender-based violence, women’s economic security and leadership development, billing itself as the “leading Jewish organization working to empower women and girls of every race, culture, ability, gender identity and sexual orientation.” JWI has not made grants in recent years but engages in philanthropy through its many workshops, conferences and volunteer programs.

Grants for Violence Prevention

The prevention of gender-based violence is one of JWI’s major focus areas. The organization runs several signature programs that promote women’s safety, including a series of workshops for teens on relationships and abuse and the publication of a needs assessment manual on domestic violence in the Jewish community. JWI also collaborates with several other Jewish and non-Jewish organizations on initiatives to provide education, prevention and intervention for vulnerable women and girls. Collaborating organizations include the Jewish Coalition Against Domestic Abuse, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the California Partnership on Domestic Violence the National Domestic Violence Hotline and others.

Grants for Work and Opportunity

JWI’s interest in work and opportunity stems from its economic security focus area, which runs several programs and workshops for financial literacy and career development. The program also advocates nationally for “legislation that enhances opportunities for women to reach their full economic potential. “ JWI’s signature programs in this area include its Lifesavings programs for Jewish teens, college students and women over 50, as well as its monthly San Diego-based Financial Fitness conferences.

Grants for Jewish Causes and Women and Girls

In addition to its gender violence prevention and women’s economic development programs, JWI supports women through its Women’s Leadership initiative. Programs include separate mentoring and networking programs for Jewish women under 40 and over 40, and the Jewish Communal Women’s Leadership Project, which runs masterclasses in career development and offers an annual fellowship, Claiming the Corner Office, for “executive level leaders of Jewish communal organizations.”
