OVERVIEW: The Paul R. Judy Center for Innovation and Research supports projects and research that expand the understanding and audience for symphony orchestra and chamber music.

IP TAKE: This funder seeks non-traditional performers who are finding innovative ways to engage and grow their audiences. It is also approachable and accessible within its limited context.

PROFILE: The Paul R. Judy Center for Innovation and Research is housed within the Institute for Music Leadership at the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester. The center’s “research and programming emphasizes the 21st Century evolution of the innovative ensemble, influenced by both the symphony orchestra and chamber music traditions.” The center offers grants for research projects with artist-centered and innovative ensembles.

Grants for Music

The Innovative Projects grant supports “[i]ndividuals, ad hoc groups, and pre-formed ensembles” who work on projects that align with the center’s stated funding priorities, which change with each grant cycle. The center’s current interests seek to fund “innovative projects and research focused on anti-racism work in the musical arts ecosystem and the achievement of diversity, equity, and inclusion in all elements of [the] profession.” Work that points toward lasting and sustainable change is prioritized.

The parameters for this category are “intentionally broad and may encompass a wide range of activities.” Previously funded projects include educational outreach programs, concerts, and recording projects.
