Charles H. Dater Foundation
/OVERVIEW: The Charles H. Dater Foundation supports arts and culture, education, healthcare, social services and community needs in Greater Cincinnati, including the Kentucky counties of Boone, Kenton and Campbell.

PROFILE: Established in 1985, the Charles H. Dater Foundation funds nonprofits in the Greater Cincinnati area. This region includes Northern Kentucky, as well. Before passing away in 1993, Dater was a local businessman and philanthropist who spent much of his life managing his family's investments and working in residential land development. The foundation’s grantmaking includes arts and culture, education, healthcare, social services, and community needs.
Foundation giving is guided by the needs of local children. Across all of its focus areas, children should benefit from all Dater Foundation grants. It reviews more than 300 grant applications each year and typically awards funding to over 100 applicants. The foundation has supported the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, Society of St. Vincent De Paul/Northern Kentucky, and other groups in the northern part of the state. The foundation is also part of a funders’ collaborative called NYK Funders that serves local nonprofits in Northern Kentucky.

Grantmaking is focused on the Greater Cincinnati area, which includes the following eight counties: Hamilton, Butler, Warren and Clermont in Ohio; Boone, Kenton and Campbell in Northern Kentucky; and Dearborn in Indiana.
This funder accepts unsolicited grant applications from local nonprofits and has an online application system. Additionally, Dater requests one-page pre-application summary proposals from nonprofits to suggest ideas before submitting a full application. Both pre-application summaries and full applications are accepted throughout the year. The foundation does not have a full-time staff, but is led by an active board of directors that meets monthly.
