IP TAKE: This health legacy funder has been increasing its grantmaking capacity in recent years and become a major philanthropic force in Kentucky.

PROFILE: Established in 2011, the Jewish Heritage Fund (JHF) is a health legacy foundation that formed when Jewish Hospital HealthCare Services merged with the former Saint Joseph Health System to form KentuckyOne Health. The hospital dates back to 1903, while the modern foundation values heritage, integrity, innovation and collaboration. JHFE "is dedicated to excellence characterized by improved health and fostering a strong, vibrant Jewish community.” JHFE funds local efforts for medical research, Jewish education, Jewish community, health and senior services.

The Jewish Heritage Fund largely supports efforts to create sustainability and improve health outcomes in recent years. It typically splits its attention between medical grants and Jewish life grants each year. Community health grants address adolescents having equitable access to all forms of healthcare and fund local youth-serving organizations. Medical research grants support funding at the University of Louisville and biomedical research efforts that recruit new talent. Jewish life grants strengthen Jewish organizations, promote Jewish programs in the broader community and help Jewish individuals grow their identity and community involvement. JHF does not typically support capital campaigns, general operating support, political efforts, sponsorships, fundraising events, individuals or endowments.
