T&J Meyer Family Foundation

OVERVIEW: The T&J Meyer Family Foundation supports health and healthcare organizations that work globally in developing countries.

IP TAKE: Meyer is not an accessible or transparent funder, but it makes both program specific and unrestricted grants. It also supports several new grantees each year. So while it might take a bit more legwork to get on Meyer’s radar, it may well be worth the time and energy. Network with them by contacting them.

This funder gives both in the U.S., where it is based, and abroad, most often to organizations based in London, but this is not a hard and fast rule.

PROFILE: The T&J Meyer Family Foundation, founded in New York City, maintains a low profile. It does not operate a website, so its public profile is practically non-existent; however, with offices in the United States and the United Kingdom, the foundation is not completely inaccessible.

Grants for Global Health

Several years of tax filings reveal that it largely supports health and healthcare organizations working in developing countries around the world. The foundation tends to support large organizations such as Heifer International and Partners in Health; however, smaller groups that work within its interest areas still receive funding. In the past, it made grants to organizations such as Last Mile Health and Hope through Health.

Grants for Global Development

In contrast to the foundation’s other areas of funding, grants for global development are focused on education and appear more modest. Grantmaking in this area does not appear to have any particular focus, preferring a broad approach in order to consider a wider range of organizations to fund. However, about half of education grants support organizations based in London or Dublin. Some funding has occurred for literacy and philanthropy education. Other grants have supported funders in Nicaragua, among others. That said, funding for education is both international and national, occurring all over. Past global development grantees focused on education include Qespina. Grants in the United States tend to focus on literacy and reading.

Grants for Environment

The foundation broadly makes grants for the environment with no clear strategy. It has given to rainforest conservation, turtle and wildlife conservation and general environmental conservation.

Other

This funder has given a handful of one-off grants to a variety of focus areas, but with no particular strategy. It has given to violence prevention in Australia and poverty, among others.

Important Grant Details:

Meyer grants typically range from $10,000 to $50,000, with a few in the $100,000 to $225,000 range. Median grants are around $35,000. On a smaller scale, Meyer also supports organizations working at the intersection of access to healthcare and poverty.

It appears the foundation also gives unrestricted grants in addition to its project or program specific grants. The foundation does not accept unsolicited grant applications or requests for funding. Meyer seems to have a handful of groups to which it offers multi-year support, while it seeks innovative global health and healthcare organizations to fund.
