PROFILE: Founded in 1972, the Summit Area Public Foundation (SAPF) serves as the local community foundation in Summit, New Jersey. This foundation administers approximately 50 donor-advised and restricted purpose funds, as well as the general unrestricted fund for nonprofits. Funding is restricted to the town of Summit and nearby communities. SAPF’s grantmaking interests are civic and community, health, education, special needs, elderly, and arts and culture.

In recent years, grants have prioritized civic and community giving. Past grantees include the Community FoodBank of NJ, Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless, and CASA of Union County. Special needs grants go to groups like the Matheny Medical and Education Center and Paper Mill Playhouse. Health grants have been awarded to the Visual Arts Center of NJ and Connection for Women & Families. Arts and culture grants have gone to SPARC and the N Dance Theatre Ensemble, education grants have gone to Literacy NJ and the Reeves-Reed Arboretum, and elderly grants have gone to the Dreamcatcher Repertory Theatre and the Summit Public Library.

A majority of foundation grants are between $5,00 and $20,000 in size. Only nonprofits in Summit, New Jersey and the surrounding areas should attempt to apply for these grants. Summit supports both well-established groups and grassroots organizations, and the funder also favors collaborative efforts. SAPF awards grants to New Jersey nonprofits on a competitive basis and has a grants committee that reviews applications and recommends grantees to the board. It has a general fund that provides grants to organizations in the region. Other large SAPF funds are the Cole-Matreyek Fund for health grants in the town of Elizabeth, the Ganner Family fund for childhood disability grants, the Ann P. Neupauer Fund for cancer research grants, and the Robert L. Strong Fund for arts grants.

Download the grant application form from the foundation’s website and submit it by April 1 to be considered at the June board meeting or by October 1 to be considered at the December board meeting. Grant applications should be emailed to grants@sapfnj.org. Grantseekers can direct general questions to the staff at info@sapfnj.org. Phone calls are not encouraged.
