PROFILE: The history of the Fund for New Jersey dates back to the early 1900s when Americans were dying of typhoid fever and Charles F. Wallace invented a chlorinating device to help municipal utilities purify water. He co-founded the Wallace & Tiernan Company in Belleville, New Jersey and invented many other instruments and devices during his lifetime as well. He and his wife established the Florence Murray Wallace Fund in 1958, which later became the Fund for New Jersey. The foundation aims to “quality of public policy decision‑making on the most significant issues affecting the people of New Jersey and our region.” Grantmaking supports public policy, advocacy, analysis, and organizing.

Rather than supporting direct services and local activities, this funder typically supports public policy efforts that spark systemic change at a larger level within the state. Past support has gone to the New Jersey Conservation Foundation, the New Jersey Highlands Coalition, the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice, and the New York/New Jersey Baykeeper. The foundation does not support capital projects.

Foundation grants tend to be between $25,000 and $100,000. Grantseekers can view a list of past grantees on the funder’s website. Grantmaking is limited to effort that affect the people of New Jersey.

The foundation accepts unsolicited letters of inquiry from nonprofits and typically responds within four weeks to new inquiries. From there, the foundation invites applicants to submit a full application. These letters must be submitted to the foundation via email, and there are no submission deadlines. Grantseekers should direct general questions to the Princeton, New Jersey-based staff at 609-356-0421 or to the staff members directly via email.
