PROFILE: Established in 2012, the Grant County Community Foundation (GCCF) is based in Silver City, New Mexico, and serves the state's southwest region. This community funder was established with $100,000 in initial gifts. The foundation board undertook a study in 2013 and 2014 to develop its mission and strategy and received tax-exempt status from the IRS in 2015. This is the first county fund to be established with the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico. Areas of interest are community benefit, arts and culture, libraries, and basic needs.
Today, GCCF oversees three agency endowments, eight planned gifts, and many fiscal sponsorships. In addition to GCCF’s unrestricted funds, many grants come from donor-created charitable funds. Give Grandly, a foundation fundraising drive, has raised over $360,000 for nonprofits in the four-county region of Southwest New Mexico. Give Grandly issue areas include children, environment, literacy, animal welfare, the arts, community wellbeing, food equity, domestic violence, LGBT issues, historic preservation, senior issues, and veterans. Foundation partners include Bingham’s Lens, the Con Alma Health Foundation, Grant County Commissioners the Lineberry Foundation, Morones & Knuttinen, LLC, Western New Mexico University, and more. GCCF has been a significant supporter of the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra.
Foundation grants tend to be between $1,000 and $5,000. In a recent grant cycle, the funder offered three awards of up to $5,000 each. In a recent cycle, the fund awarded grants totaling $20,000 to five groups, with $15,000 coming from unrestricted funds and $5,000 through the Sebert Brewer Fund. The foundation made grants to the Deming Silver Linings, the Virus Theater, Mimbres Culture Heritage Site, the Gila Valley Library, and the Lotus Center. GCCF offers grants to nonprofits in Grant, Hidalgo, Luna, and Catron Counties.
