Capital Bank Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Capital Bank Foundation is a bank funder that supports Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia communities in the areas of arts and culture, education and leadership, environment, financial literacy, and health and human services.

IP TAKE: This is a relatively new funding entity that takes the bank’s charitable giving beyond Tennessee and to other parts of the Southeast as well.

PROFILE: Established in 2018, the Capital Bank Foundation formed following Capital Bank’s acquisition by First Horizon National Corporation. Since the acquisition, the First Horizon Foundation, which was established in 1993, has operated under two entities, Capital Bank Foundation and the First Tennessee Foundation. The foundation “invests in a way that engages our employees, responds inclusively to needs and promotes progress and prosperity across our markets.” Grantmaking includes arts and culture, education and leadership, environment, financial literacy, health and human services.

The Capital Bank Foundation’s arts giving promotes excellence and enrichment in the arts. Education grants largely work to develop the next generation of leaders. Environmental grants focus on sustainability, while financial literacy grants invest in the financial futures of people in the bank’s service area. Finally, health and human service funding is broad and encompasses various aspects of community well-being. The bank also awards employee leadership grants and provides funds for employee matching gifts.

Foundation grants tend to range from $5,000 to $25,000. The funder does not have an online grants database. The geographic focus of this funder is Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia communities. As a general rule, this foundation does not fund trips, tours, individuals, K-12 schools, political or religious causes, operating budget deficits, or charities that redistribute funds.

The funder accepts unsolicited grant requests from local organizations between October 1 and December 1. Staff members review applications, and regional leader review selected applications to make grant decisions. The bank’s general phone number is 800-639-5111, and its email address is customerservice@capitalbank-us.com.
