PROFILE: Established in 1991, the Arlington Community Foundation (ACF) is a community foundation based in Arlington, Virginia. The Honorable William T. Newman, Jr. was inspired to create a community foundation in Arlington after the San Francisco Community Foundation supported people in need after the 1989 earthquake in San Francisco. ACF administers over 150 funds today. The foundation “uses the power of philanthropy and its role as community convener and catalyst to improve the quality of life in Arlington and beyond.” It funds local efforts for Homelessness prevention, education, arts, youth and families and other community needs.

The Arlington Community Foundation funds a broad spectrum of charitable purposes and needs in the county. Some grants are regularly available, while others are part of special opportunity grant rounds that address specific needs. Opportunities at ACF include prompt response grants for urgent needs, education fund grants to support educators, STEM workforce development teacher fellowships for public school teachers and community impact grants that support collaboration in ongoing programs. In addition to grants, ACF also awards scholarships to local students. The foundation hosts a Spirit of Community Award Luncheon each year to recognize an individual, corporation or organization that is committed to improving the quality of life in the Arlington area.
