PROFILE: Established in 1972, the Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation (GLCF) is a community foundation based in Lynchburg, Virginia. An employee of Fidelity National Bank originally submitted an idea to form a community trust, which led to the formation of GLCF. The foundation aims to "enhance the quality of life in the communities served by the establishment of permanent endowments for the city of Lynchburg and the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford and Campbell, with income distributed annually to charitable organizations within the community.” GLCF funds local efforts for children’s programs, historical preservation, education the arts, family programs, crisis programs and healthy living.

The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation has dedicated the most support to local children’s programs, followed by healthy living efforts in the region. GLCF makes annual grants that are donor-designated and also through its competitive grant cycles. Foundation priorities include helping the disadvantaged, helping nonprofit manage themselves more effectively, developing self-reliance, prevention and promoting volunteering. The Plymale Foundation is administered by GLCF has has its own grant cycle and deadlines It also has a youth philanthropy program that gets local students involved in awarding grants in a competitive process. In addition to grants, the funder provides college scholarships to area students.
