PROFILE: Established in 1992, the Hinton Area Foundation (HAF) is a community foundation based in Hinton, West Virginia. It formed after local residents met to discuss the idea of marshaling charitable funds and after receiving a challenge grant and family donor support. The foundation aims to "encourage philanthropic giving and to provide a common source for contributions to benefit the local community.” HAF funds local efforts for education, arts, beautification, health, human services and recreation.

The Hinton Area Foundation has several grant opportunities that are accessible for local nonprofits. Community Impact Grants address many different local needs in the community and are not issue-specific. Making A Difference Community Improvement Project Grants fund community improvement projects that engage community members. HAF gives priority to applications that request matching funds. Hinton Area Foundation Learning Innovation Mini-Grants assist teachers for grades Pre-K through 12 and are up to $500 for innovative projects. In addition to grants, HAF also awards scholarships to local students.
