OVERVIEW: The James H. and Alice Teubert Charitable Trust supports the blind and visually impaired in West Virginia.

FUNDING AREAS: Health, blindness, visually impaired individuals

IP TAKE: The Teubert Charitable Trust largely funds work related to the blind; however, it also prioritizes funding local to specific West Virginia communities. It does not have a website to guide grantseekers, which restricts information about grantmaking strategies and guidelines.

PROFILE: Established in 1987, the James H. and Alice Teubert Charitable Trust is a private foundation based in Huntington, West Virginia. Clinton Teubert was a postal worker who established the foundation and named it after his parents. After his death in 1979 at the age of 91, he left most of his $3 million fortune to charitable causes that serve the blind. Jimelle Bowen has served as the foundation’s executive director since 1988. The foundation aims to "support activities that serve to correct, cure or prevent blindness, or alleviate the hardships resulting from blindness.” It funds local efforts for health, blindness and visually impaired individuals.

Teubert instructed in his will that funds should support children’s summer camps, little league organizations and a local golf tournament. Recent foundation tax records indicate that the funder mostly supports blindness associations, schools, museums, wellness programs and youth organizations. Clinics and libraries that provide services to the blind have also received Teubert’s support.

Grants range between about $1,000 and $750,000. Learn more about this funder’s local giving by examining its recent tax records. Grantmaking focuses on Cabell and Wayne Counties in West Virginia. Past local grantees include the YMCA in Huntington, Cabell Wayne Association for the Blind and the Heritage Farm, Museum and Village.
