PROFILE: Established in 1992, Virginia Health Care Foundation (VHCF) is a public/private partnership and grantmaker based in Richmond, Virginia. Virginia General Assembly and its Joint Commission on Health Care created VHCF to improve the local primary care delivery system and strengthen the healthcare safety net. The foundation aims to "help uninsured Virginians and those who live in underserved communities receive medical, dental and mental health care.” It funds local efforts for free clinics, community health centers and access to healthcare.

The Virginia Health Care Foundation largely funds organizations that make patient visits possible, offer free prescription medications and enroll Virginians in state-sponsored health insurance. VHCF funding helps establish and expand dental programs, hire nurse practitioners and physician assistants to work in free clinics and attract mental health professionals to rural areas. The foundation is also interested in training new health professional students and providing medication assistance for economically disadvantaged residents. Special foundation initiatives have included behavioral health integration and forming partnerships to connect patients with permanent and stable medical homes.

The Grants range between about $20,000 and $150,000.  Learn more about this funder’s local giving by examining its recent tax records. Grantmaking focuses on the entire state of Virginia. Past local grantees include the Charlottesville Free Clinic, Center for Healthy Hearts and the Chesapeake Care Clinic.

This foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits for its health safety net grants in the spring and fall. Application deadlines are typically in January and July.  Other grants are awarded only in response to VHCF’s occasional requests for proposals.
