Hovde Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Hovde Foundation supports clinical research in search of a cure for multiple sclerosis and charitable relief in devastated areas around the world.

IP TAKE: While the foundation works on an international level, its domestic grants program primarily touches Wisconsin organizations.

PROFILE: Established in 1998, the Hovde Foundation was founded by brothers Eric and Steve Hovde, who work in private equity and asset management. The Hovde Foundation supports clinical research in search of a cure for multiple sclerosis and charitable relief in devastated areas around the world.

The Hovde Foundation has three main initiatives. Nearly half the foundation’s grantmaking goes towards multiple sclerosis research, including ongoing support to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Eric himself has MS. Hovde Homes, meanwhile, “provide shelter, supportive services, and love to vulnerable children.” A lot of this work takes places internationally, but there is one Hovde Home in Wisconsin, and important region of giving for the family. The Hovde Foundation makes Domestic Grants to various U.S.-based organizations that serve the poor, homeless, hungry, sick, and otherwise vulnerable people. It focuses particularly on urgent needs, “bridging key gaps to augment impact, and jump-starting programmatic objectives.” These grants are given in the areas of housing, health, community development and youth development/education.

Grants range from $200 to $184,540. In a recent fiscal year, the foundation made grants totaling around $330,481. Past local grantees include Goodman Center/Girls Inc, Horizon High School, Madison Symphony Orchestra League, and Madison Reading Project.

The Hovde Foundation is not currently accepting unsolicited requests. Grants are by invitation only.
