Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation supports higher education for students through scholarships and fellowships.

FUNDING AREAS: Higher education, scholarships, fellowships

IP TAKE: While the foundation does not make grants for which applicants can apply, it does offer aid in the form of scholarships and fellowships. Newcombe is a major player in higher education funding that groups should know about in the Tri-State Area.

PROFILE: The Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation is a private family foundation that supports students in pursuit of higher education. Ms. Newcombe was the daughter of a physician and public-spirited citizen named Dr. Matthew J. Wilson, and she established this foundation in her will. The family invested deeply in the pharmaceutical company, Smith Kline, and Charlotte Newcombe became committed to helping children pursue college. Grantmaking is focused on scholarships and fellowships for higher education.

The Newcombe Foundation scholarship program does not make grants directly to individual students. Instead, it provides partner institutions with funding through four different programs. These are the Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship, Newcombe Scholarships for Mature Women Students, the Newcombe Scholarships for Students with Disabilities, and Special Scholarship Endowments. Then the partner universities, colleges, and foundation partner choose the individual students who will receive the funds. The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation receives funds from Newcombe to administer the doctoral fellowships. Over 1,214 Newcombe Fellows have been chosen and represent more than 75 American universities since 1981.

Newcombe has awarded more than $65.4 million in grants to provide these scholarship and fellowships for the purpose of higher education. In a recent year the funder gave grants exceeding $1.4 million for student higher education. A portion of this funding is in the form of matching challenge grants. Organizations can learn more about past Newcombe grants on the funder’s website. The foundation is based in Princeton, New Jersey and much of the funder’s giving is focused on this region.

The foundation does not accept unsolicited grant proposals. The phone number to get in touch with the staff is 609-924-7022.
