OVERVIEW: The Johnson Family Foundation (JFF) supports the development of healthy, vibrant and just communities where individuals, families, and the next generation of leaders will thrive. JFF funds programs to improve the Health of the Environment; Promote Equality and Social Progress; and Support Education and Youth

IP TAKE: While JFF has somewhat limited grantmaking priorities, with funding concentrated around Vermont and Colorado, it also makes grants in New York City. This is a tough nut to crack, since it doesn’t accept unsolicited contact or proposals.

PROFILE: Established in 1990, the Johnson Family Foundation (JFF) was founded by Thomas Phillips and Jane Moore Johnson It is headquartered in New York City, and supports the development of healthy, vibrant and just communities where individuals, families, and the next generation of leaders will thrive. JFF funds programs to improve the Health of the Environment; Promote Equality and Social Progress; and Support Education and Youth.

JFF has given away more than $50 million through the years. As part of JFF’s work to promote equality and social progress, it makes investments to promote the mental health and well-being of LGBTQ people across the lifespan, “empowering LGBTQ youth and building the capacity of the movement for LGBTQ equality.” Its Vermont place-based Stewardship and Sustainability program focuses on “ finding pathways out of poverty, the equitable sharing of resources, and reinvigorating participation in community and democracy. In Colorado, funding is focused on select nonprofits that enhance educational opportunities, enrich the arts, preserve our environment, and provide support for those most in need. Its Justice focus area works to promote “a world in which all members of society have the opportunity and ability to participate fully in civic life.”

Important Grant Details:

The majority of grants fall in the $25,000 to $75,000 range. Past local grantees include Breakthrough New York, Bronx Freedom Fund, Caron Foundation of New York, Columbia School of International & Public Affairs, New York Common Pantry, TEAK Fellowship, and Trevor Project. JFF does not accept unsolicited grant applications or requests for funding.
