PROFILE: Based in New York City, the Alphadyne Foundation was established in 2020 and is steered by Phillipe Khuong-Huu, a founder and CIO of Alphadyne Asset Management. Khuong-Huu, a native of France, previously worked at J.P. Morgan and Goldman Sachs, where he eventually became a partner and served as head of the global interest rates products group. He also serves on the board of directors of New York City’s Julliard School. The Alphadyne Foundation was established in response to the COVID-19 crisis when Kuong-Huu and others at Alphadyne recognized the serious difficulties with which arts and other organizations were suddenly faced. More than half of this funder’s inaugural grantmaking has gone to performing arts organizations. To a lesser extent, the foundation has supported organizations working in food distribution and economic opportunity. New York City is an area of geographic priority.

Grants for Music

The Alphadyne Foundation does not name specific goals for its music grantmaking, but music organizations represent a significant portion of Alpadyne’s performing arts giving. The foundation appears to prioritize organizations in New York City. Among its grantees are Brooklyn’s concert venue National Sawdust, the Kaufman Music Center, the Perlman Music Program and Musical Storefronts, a concert series that ran in New York City’s many empty storefronts in early 2021. On the virtual front, the foundation supported the Violin Channel’s Vanguard Concerts, a digital series launched in February 2021.

Grants for Dance

The Alphadyne Foundation has demonstrated a strong interest in supporting modern dance and ballet companies, providing critical support throughout the COVID-19 crisis. Grantees include Philadelphia’s Ballet X, the Dance Theater of Harlem and the Kaatsbaan Spring Festival, a showcase of modern dancers in Tivoli, New York.

Grants for Theater

Theater appears to be a smaller area of giving in Alphadyne’s performing arts portfolio. The foundation has supported New York City’s Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park productions for the summer of 2021.

Other Grantmaking Opportunities

In addition to supporting performing arts organizations, the Alphadyne Foundation has given to organizations that aim to alleviate poverty and create economic opportunity in New York City. Grantees include ReThink Food NYC, which channels unused food from restaurants to needy individuals and families, and Accompany Capital, which provides financial education, counseling and small business loans to immigrants, refugees and women entrepreneurs.

Important Grant Details:

In its first year of grantmaking, the Alphadyne Foundation gave away about $10 million in grants. About $6 million went to performing arts organizations. This funder has demonstrated a strong interest in music and appears to prioritize organizations operating in the greater New York City area.
