Pedigree Foundation: Grants for Animals and Wildlife
/OVERVIEW: The Pedigree Foundation is dedicated to helping make dogs more adoptable so they can find homes. It is incredibly inclusive in its grant making, which means that many of the applicants that apply for a grant and meet the guidelines typically receive some type of assistance.

PROFILE: Founded in 2007 by Pedigree brand dog foods, the Pedigree Foundation was established to reduce the number of dogs living in shelters by helping to make them more adoptable and decreasing the number of owner surrenders each year. It awards grants to numerous types of dog-centric programs, including initiatives for transportation of dogs to areas where they are likely to be adopted, foster programs, behavior training and programs aimed at matching dogs with suitable owners.
Pedigree awards animal welfare grants through three distinct grant programs. Dogs Rule grants support innovation in increasing adoption rates with the goal of sharing findings with other animal welfare organizations and are awarded in the amount of $50,000 a year for two years. Program Development grants are awarded in amounts of up to $12,000 for organizations working to increase adoption rates of dogs through transportation, fostering, training and matching. The foundation also awards grants for Disaster Relief, which support organizations that rescue dogs from natural disasters, puppy mills and other abusive situations.
In a recent year, the Pedigree Foundation made over $800,000 in grants ranging in amount from $5,000 to $50,000. Grantmaking is national in scope, with most grants supporting animal rescues and humane societies that either specialize in or prioritize canine adoptions. Past grantees include the Kauai Humane Society in Hawaii, Austin Pet Alive, the Humane Society of the San Gabriel Valley and the Lost Dog Rescue Foundation of Falls Church, Virginia. Pedigree accepts applications via its online application portals for each of its three of grantmaking programs. Application guidelines are available at the foundation’s website. This funder typically runs a single grant cycle each year, with applications accepted for a period of several weeks between March and May of each year.
