Funding Trends
Individual gifts and institutional grants to homeless shelters, and other direct service providers, remain important sources in addressing housing insecurity and its consequences. Such donations and grants often connect donors and recipients through a shared sense of place. Efforts in this space — whether through the provision of a hot meal or shelter — renders home-insecure people visible.
However, philanthropic dollars represent only a small fraction of funding that flows to housing and homelessness and to addressing its root causes. Instead, this funding space largely remains the domain of government — from the public and subsidized housing to Medicaid and unemployment insurance — and unbridled private market forces, such as speculative real estate investments that substantially increase housing costs, thereby displacing residents in the name of gentrification. Inflation-adjusted earnings remain stagnant, further fueling the homelessness crisis.
Philanthropy increasingly views its role as a catalyzer both within the public and private sectors. Grantmaking here works to expand access to affordable housing, prevent homelessness, and provide long-term solutions like permanent supportive housing. Leading foundations and philanthropists include the Ford Foundation, the Hilton Foundation, the Melville Charitable Trust, and many others in order to encourage public sector investments in housing assistance and mobility. Funders like these also work to incentivize private sector investments for housing equity.
Vulnerable and marginalized communities are far more likely to experience housing insecurity and homelessness than white Americans. Many foundations and donors are beginning to take a more inclusive approach, one interested in equity, gentrification and fair housing policies. Other funding trends include an explicit link between how homelessness affects health and economic mobility.

The AbbVie Foundation supports organizations responding to natural and man-made disasters occurring around the world. It supports housing and homelessness as a result of such disasters.

Adobe conducts broad grantmaking in the community development space both in the United States and abroad. Nationally, it funds work were Its U.S. branches of Adobe’s employee community fund operate.

The AEGON Transamerica Foundation funds a broad range of initiatives in areas where the insurance company has a corporate presence. Its giving funds arts & culture, civic & community, education & literacy, health & welfare, and support for the United Way. It broadly gives to issues centered on housing and homelessness.
