PROFILE: Established in 2008, the Community Foundation of Utah is a statewide community foundation based in Salt Lake City, Utah. Until CFU was founded, Utah was the last of the 50 states without a community foundation to serve the state. Today, it manages over 200 funds and typically grants over $12 million per year. CFU funds local community development housing, homelessness, youth, environment, LGBTQ, and women and girls in the state.

Grants for Community Development, Housing and Homelessness, Environment, LGBTQ, and Women and Girls

The Community Foundation of Utah primarily awards grants through donor-advised funds, which are operated on an invitation-only basis. However, CFU also offers several competitive funding opportunities that are open to applications. Community development grants support affordable housing organizations and projects that support low- to moderate-income communities in Utah. Its housing and homeless pillar serves local individuals and families who are facing or at risk of homelessness. The LGBTQ fund here has been serving the LGBTQ community since 2012. The Salt Lake City youth athletic grant serves youth athletic groups that benefit low-income athletes residing within Salt Lake City Council Districts. The Social Investors Forum awards grants to social enterprises, and the Utah Natural Heritage Fund aims to protect the state’s natural environment. There are two women’s giving circles that are affiliated with CFU, the Three Corners Women’s Giving Circle and the Utah Women’s Giving Circle.
