PROFILE: Established in 1987, the Richard K. & Shirley S. Hemingway Foundation is a private foundation based in Salt Lake City, Utah. Richard Hemingway pursued a banking career and was president and chairman of Commercial Security Bank and Idaho Bank and Trust. Shirley Hemingway obtained a master’s degree in dietetics, was the mother of five children, and actively volunteered for local organizations. The foundation aims to provide “resources to charitable organizations and programs that serve the communities in Utah and Idaho in the following areas: arts and culture, environmental stewardship, and self-sufficiency.”

Grants for Arts and Culture, Environment, and Community Development

The Richard K. and Shirley S. Hemingway Foundation honors the philanthropic interests of the founders and focuses on local organizations. Arts and culture grants support access to programs for low-income and disadvantaged children and youth. Environment grants support lakes, rivers, streams and watersheds through water protection and conservation programs. Self-sufficiency grants fund early childhood education and also housing and homelessness causes. The Hemingway Foundation will not usually fund an organization for more than three consecutive years.

Past local grantees include Volunteers of America, Wild Utah Project and the Pioneer Theatre.

Grants range between $10,000 and $50,000. Grantmaking focuses on the states of Utah and Idaho. More specifically, it funds northern Utah and southern and central Idaho.

This foundation accepts unsolicited letters of inquiry from nonprofits. The LOI periods for all program areas typically run from late January to early March.
