PROFILE: Established in 1997, the B.W. Bastian Foundation is a private foundation based in Orem, Utah. Born in 1948, Bruce Wayne Bastian co-founded WordPerfect Software Company and has committed a significant portion of his life to philanthropy and activism for local LGBTQ communities. The foundation “strives to build community and understanding by supporting local and national institutions.” It supports local efforts for the arts, education, equality for the LGBTQ community, and HIV/AIDS programs.

The B.W. Bastian Foundation prioritizes the equality of all Americans and requires grant applicants to include a statement about their commitment to equality. This statement must address the inclusion of the LGBTQ community in particular. The Bastian Foundation provides general operating support, program/project support, capacity-building support, and advocacy support. However, it does not fund lobbying, political campaigns, film productions, scholarships, capital projects, research or individuals.

Past local grantees include Ballet West, Intermountain Therapy Animals, Planned Parenthood and Utah Food Bank.

Grants range between about $100 and $15,000. Grantmaking focuses on the Intermountain West region of the U.S., which includes Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana.

This foundation does not accept unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits. Therefore, nonprofits must contact the foundation’s executive director, Michael Marriott, prior to submitting a grant application. Application deadlines are March 15, September 15, and November 15.
