PROFILE: Established in 1957, the Ballantine Family Fund (BFF) is a family foundation based in Durango, Colorado. Morley C. Ballantine and Arthur A. Ballantine Jr. created this foundation to enhance the quality of life in their home region. The founding couple purchased local newspapers and merged them to create The Durango Herald-News and then The Durango Herald. The Community Foundation Serving Southwest Colorado serves as the grant manager for BFF, but Ballantine trustees make their own grantmaking decisions and set the funding priorities. The foundation aims to provide "financial assistance to nonprofit causes that benefit the human condition in Southwest Colorado.” It funds local efforts for arts and culture, environment, animal protection, education, human services and youth .

The Ballantine Family Fund supports a wide variety of local causes in each year. In recent years, the most grants have gone towards arts and culture, followed by human services and then education. BFF provides program and project support, as well as general operating support.

Grants range between about $500 and $5,000. The funder awards about $250,000 each year. Learn more about this funder’s local giving by examining its recent tax records. Grantmaking focuses on Southwest Colorado, which includes the following counties: Archuleta, Dolores, Montezuma, La Plata and San Juan.
