PROFILE: Established in 1987, the private R. Harold Burton Foundation is based in Salt Lake City, Utah. This is the foundation of Robert Harold Burton, who gave money and time back to his community before his death in 1987. His wife, Maybelle Covey Burton, was involved with the foundation before her death in 1997. Today, the foundation “strives to continue his legacy of service by supporting education, science, literary and health projects in the greater Salt Lake Metropolitan area.”

The R. Harold Burton Foundation funds a broad array of causes at the local level. In the past, it has supported legal aid societies, YMCAs, health projects and youth organizations. Most of the funder’s grants are in the form of general operating support.

Grant seekers must submit applications to the attention of Executive Director Stephen R. Morgan via mail, FedEx, or hand delivery. Applications are typically due each year on February 15 and July 15; the foundation pays grant monies in May/June and October/November. After submitting an application and after the deadline date has passed, fundraisers must call to schedule an appointment to review the request with the foundation staff.
