IP TAKE: Jewish-affiliated organizations have a competitive edge with RCF, but local organizations of various types can secure program and project support here throughout the year.

PROFILE: Established in 1995, the Rose Community Foundation (RCF) is a community funder based in Denver, Colorado. It is a health legacy foundation created with assets from the sale of the Rose Medical Center to a health care corporation. This was a Jewish community hospital in Denver, so the foundation retains Jewish values still today. RCF aims to “to enhance the quality of life of the Greater Denver community through its leadership, resources, traditions, and values.” RCF funds local aging, child and family development, education, health, and Jewish life efforts.

The Rose Community Foundation awards program area grants in its focus areas and also for capacity building efforts. A majority of foundation grants are for project and program support. However, RCF provides more occasional general operating support and capital support. RCF also awards donor-directed grants that can be broader in scope and geographic reach. Topics of interest for donor-directed grants are arts, culture, media, children and youth, economic self-sufficiency, education, environment, animal welfare, outdoor education, health, general community support, international causes, Jewish life, religion, and social justice.

The foundation also created a COVID-19 Response Fund to support the community during the coronavirus pandemic.

Grants range between about $5,000 and $200,000. Learn more about this funder’s local giving on RCF’s program area grants page. Grantmaking focuses on the Greater Denver area of Colorado, which includes seven Colorado counties: Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, and Jefferson. Past local grantees include the Center for African American Health, the Senior Hub, Adams County Youth Initiative, and the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado.

This foundation accepts grant applications from nonprofits but requires organizations to speak with a program officer before completing an application. The application process is online, and funding decisions can take up to four to six months. RCF accepts program area grant applications on a rolling basis with no deadlines.
