Giving Trends in Ohio

Ohio, located in the Midwest, is the seventh-most-populous state in the U.S., with a population of 11.78 million. More than 7,000 grantmakers collectively gave over $3.5 billion in grants for Ohio in 2019, according to Candid.

The statewide network of grantmakers, Philanthropy Ohio, has nearly 200 members who collectively hold over $50 billion in assets. Policy priorities of the grantmaker group include education, health, and housing. That said, grantmakers in Ohio tend to prioritize funding education, community and economic development, and health care. Some substantial private foundations focus on Ohio grants to particular parts of the state, such as the George Gund Foundation (Cleveland) and the GAR Foundation (Akron).
